Courtney Balsam Interior Design is a San Antonio-based studio creating homes that feel personal, layered, and delightfully lived-in. Each project draws from a mix of thoughtful details, collected pieces, and a clear understanding of how the home will be used over time.
Rather than following a singular style, every space reflects the people who live there —resulting in homes that feel expressive, considered, and entirely their own.
With a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design and a long-standing love for detailed aesthetics, Shannon joined Balsam Interior Design in 2020. She is known for her close attention to texture and composition, approaching each project with the belief that a home should engage the senses in a way that feels both intentional and effortless.
In contrast to Courtney’s deep Texas roots, Shannon brings a broader perspective shaped by time spent living in England, Delaware, and Illinois as part of her family’s Air Force life. That experience informs the way she sees a space—layered, adaptable, and reflective of the people who live there.
She is naturally forward-thinking in her work, often anticipating decisions before they arise and ensuring each element contributes to a cohesive whole. This perspective carries into her personal style as well, where she mixes fun and unexpected elements with classic pieces, all selected with intention and a sense of individuality.
Outside the studio, Shannon enjoys the ongoing process of shaping her own home—a mid-century property set on 13 acres that she and her family continue to refine over time. She’s often sourcing something unique or planning the next project, and values staying active, traveling, and spending time at live music events. It’s a rhythm that mirrors the way she approaches her work: engaged, thoughtful, and always evolving.
Design, at its core, is about understanding how a space will be lived in before it ever exists.
With over two decades of experience in residential design, Courtney approaches each project with a clear sense of how a home should function, flow, and feel over time. Long before selections are made, she is already walking through the space in her mind — considering how rooms connect, how light moves, and how each area will support both daily routines and the moments that matter most.
Her work is grounded in a thoughtful, detail-driven approach. Every decision is considered in relation to the whole, allowing the home to come together in a way that feels natural, cohesive, and lasting.
Based in San Antonio, Courtney brings a deep appreciation for homes that are both refined and lived in. Her work is influenced by travel, a love of unique and meaningful pieces, and the belief that a home should reflect the people who live there, never a singular style or trend.
Outside the studio, Courtney enjoys many of the same comforts her clients value in their homes: sharing delicious meals, early morning walks, pilates classes, and exploring antique markets or estate sales. She also values time spent with her husband, their two daughters, and their Yorkie, Finley, who her girls claim is the favorite.
Selections are made with a longevity in mind — chosen for both performance and craftsmanship, through trusted vendors and custom furnishings, so each element holds up beautifully over time.
No two homes are approached the same way. Each space is shaped around your routines, your preferences, and the moments that matter most — from slow family mornings to a table full of people you love.
Every detail is developed and documented so it can be executed exactly as intended. The process moves forward with consistency, and nothing gets lost between the vision and the home.
Each project is developed as a layered composition — balancing new selections with the pieces that already hold meaning. The heirloom, the collected artwork, the detail that brings back last summer's trip to Portugal. All of it belongs.
Great design begins with listening. Each project starts with a clear understanding of how you live, what matters to you, and how you want your home to feel. The final result should always reflect you, not a predefined style.
You are not left to navigate decisions on your own. Each step is thoughtfully led, with options presented clearly and at the right time, allowing you to move forward with confidence and without overwhelm.
A well-run project should feel organized and steady from beginning to end. With careful planning and oversight, the process moves forward smoothly, allowing you to stay engaged without carrying the weight of every detail.
